Day-Date Oysterquartz
19019 - White Gold
An extremely rare and important white gold Oysterquartz Day-Date that I doubt we will ever see again, retailed by Watches Of Switzerland (New Bond St) in Jan 1987, complete with Rolex box & papers, and extensive Rolex service history.
Production of the Oysterquartz started in 1977 and ended in circa 2002, with less than 25,000 pieces made. With most cased in stainless steel or yellow gold, 18ct white gold examples like this ref 19019 are very rarely seen for sale, so rare in fact there are only 5 other examples currently for sale on Chrono24 complete with box & papers.
The 70's angular case design and integral bracelet construction clearly distinguish it from a classic Day-Date, however even more impressive is its quartz calibre 5055 movement, one of the most advanced, accurate and reliable quartz movements of its time. To maintain superior accuracy, Rolex recognized the need for a higher frequency so the oscillators of the Oysterquartz movements were four times faster than those of previous Beta-21. These in-house quartz calibers were hailed as modern marvels when launched, and they offered superior accuracy to any of Rolex’s mechanical movements at the time, they also offered quickset calendar functionality, as well as hacking seconds.
