6263 - Sigma Dial
Retailed in 1974, this vintage Daytona ref. 6263 sports the highly coveted black acrylic tachymetre bezel, all black "Sigma dial" (a rarity of the early 6263's) with no Daytona signature and nice chunky 2nd series chronograph pushers. Powered by the manually-wound Valjoux caliber 727, these Plexiglas 6263's always feel a little bigger on the wrist than the steel bezel 6265's, and as a rule with vintage Daytonas, black dials are rarer.
The sigma dial feat 'Rolex Oyster Cosmograph' in elegant silvered serifed typeface, and the important 'σ T Swiss T σ' at 6, to denote the use of precious metal; white gold hands filled with tritium, and matching baton hour markers tipped with small tritium spheres. The chronograph's silver concentric registers add a touch of contrast to the matte black charcoal dial.
Over the years, this 4.1m serial Cosmograph has benefitted from subtle upgrades from its Rolex servicing, like the sturdier 78350 Oyster bracelet, but otherwise remains in beautiful honest condition. Powered by the hand-wound Valjoux calibre 727, and waterproof to 60m. Guaranteed for two years.
