6238 - Pre Daytona
The famous 6238 "Pre-Daytona"..
Introduced in 1962, these extremely elegant and well proportioned 36mm chronographs were the immediate pre-cursors to very first Daytonas.
In remarkably crisp condition we are pleased to present this highly collectable manual-wind chronograph complete with its original bill of sale from "Abercrombie & Fitch" (yes really!) when it retailed for the princely sum of $210 back in 1965. Interestingly, being of 1965 manufacture, it is also one of the very first examples to benefit from the upgraded 722 calibre, an improvement from the 72B found in earlier 6238s.
The condition of this important chrongraph has to be seen to be believed, and the silver monochrome dial is as sharp, and detailed as when it left Rolex. Every delicately serifed numeral looks perfect under a loupe, the sharp faceted hour markers give a real brightness to the watch whilst the tritium lume plots match the hands perfectly in their warm, creamy colour. very first 6238's to feature the calibre 722
It's estimated that fewer than 3600 ref. 6238's were made, and we anticipate prices on these important milestones to climb sharply in coming years. These could well be 'the next big thing' for collectors and it doesn't get much better than this.
