Explorer "First Reference"
6150 - Gilt Dial
The 6150 from '53 - the rarest and most important reference in Explorer history.
The first Explorer model, produced in extremely low numbers in 1953 and bridging the Oyster Perpetual “Pre-Explorer” to the official Explorer, the 6150 is a grail watch for collectors. With its gilt galvanic dial, original (untouched) lume & hands, and strong case profile, this 1953 pre Explorer embodies the pioneering spirit of what was to become the first watch to reach the summit of Everest.
A cornerstone in the Explorer story, this reference 6150 dates to the very birth of the model in the early 1950s. Its glossy black gilt dial, with 3-6-9 Arabic numerals and luminous Mercedes hands, captures the rugged elegance that would define the Explorer line. The gilt printing has aged beautifully, with warm golden text and markers standing proud against the black "pre Explorer" dial.
Powered by the automatic early calibre A296 Rolex movement, the 6150 predates the chronometer-rated calibres of later Explorers, adding to its historical charm. The robust 36mm Oyster case wears larger than expected, with its smooth bezel and early folded link Oyster bracelet reinforcing the tool-watch DNA. The inside of the caseback is stamped 2nd quarter 1953.
