Audemars Piguet
Royal Oak Jumbo
5402ST - Certificate D'Origine
In the world of high-end watch collecting, the importance of the debut ref. 5402ST Jumbo Royal Oak cannot be overstated. Designed by Gerald Genta in 1972 - it was the very first Royal Oak reference Audemars Piguet ever produced.
One of only 404 pieces made, this D-Series example is in remarkable condition. The steel case and octagonal bezel retain sharp, well-defined factory edges, with crisp transitions between satin and polished surfaces. The deep-blue Nuit petite tapisserie dial bears the vintage AUDEMARS PIGUET logo at 12 o’clock and correct "swiss" only demarcation at six. The integrated brushed steel Gay Frères bracelet shows virtually no wear and remains exceptionally comfortable on the wrist.
Measuring 39mm in diameter it was particularly large for the era, yet incredibly thin at 6.8mm. It was powered by AP's self-winding calibre 2121, a movement which set the benchmark for Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin alike. A remarkable achievement, especially during a time most watchmakers were focused on quartz technology. Accompanied by its AP service records from 2013 and its Audemars Piguet Certificate of Registration dated May 1982.
When AP prices bounce back, and the Royal Oak awakens from its post Covid slumber, you may kick yourself over this one...
