Oyster
678 - Yellow Gold
This solid yellow gold Rolex Cushion Shape from 1930 is the foundation upon which every other Oyster stands, claiming 20 World Patens. An art-deco cushion case in superb condition, with clear and present assay marks inside the caseback, indicating this was hallmarked in Glasgow – 1929-1930.
At a time when watch collecting is too often reduced to box-ticking for the latest releases, true connoisseurs should question a collection that lacks the original Oyster.
The present watch has been very well cared for. The clear, sharp coin-edge milling on the screw-down bezel and case-back (both serve as keys by which the waterproof Oyster effect is obtained). The early winding crown, marked 'Oyster Patent' is also crisp and defined, and most importantly the white enamel dial is in good condition for its age.
The Oyster was the world's first successful waterproof watch. Released in 1926, it was an immediate smash hit. The British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore one on her swim across the English Channel. Twice in fact.
These watches were usually offered with metal dials, either plain or engine-turned, whereas this is a premium model in white enamel. The style is fresh and unselfconscious. The classic roman numerals are simple and legible, whilst exhibiting a very discreet playful air in their serifs and terminals. Blued steel 'pomme' hands, made famous by Lepine, and later adopted by Breguet in the best horological tradition. Rolex applied the words 'Ultra Prima' in tiny lettering just above the sub-seconds, indicating the very top grade of hand-adjusted high-precision movement. In full working order - guaranteed for two years.
