Breitling
Duograph "Rattrapante"
Vintage Split-Seconds
Only 350 Breitling Duographs were produced between 1943 and 1970. A similar Duograph to this sold at Phillips for 56,000 CHF.
This extremely rare vintage split-seconds Breitling was in the posession of the same owner for 30 years. This watch represents an interesting parallel between Breitling and Patek Philippe: both companies have used the whole crown as a push-button to split the hands (as seen here), whereas other makers invariably used a separate button protruding from the crown. Only a handful of Duographs are known with this discreet type of button.
Split-seconds is a function that allows you to pause one of the twin chronograph seconds hands while the other keeps going – it 'splits' into two. You can then take an interim reading, such as a lap time while still tracking the total. The split hands have to be extremely light (they take double the energy of a normal chronograph), and so split-seconds chronographs are often very elegant, and this Breitling Duograph is no exception. The unretouched biscuit-patina guilloché-effect silvered dial has beautiful rose gold indices, with a matched set of slender rose gold hands including the split-seconds chronograph hands with their intact counterpoises.
The case is clean and sharp, with closely-fitting oblong chrono pushers. The split function is activated by clicking the crown. The irreplaceable 'Brevet' signed crown with its Swiss flag attest to Breitling's patent for this watch, first produced around 1939–1940.
Two-year Watch Club warranty along with the distinctive bright yellow vintage Breitling box.
