The Belgian race began well for AF Corse, with Watch Club-sponsored drivers Melo and Bruni achieving pole position. Team-mates Luís Pérez Companc and Matías Russo weren’t very far behind, at fourth on the grid. The final three drivers from the AF Corse camp, Jean Alesi, Gianfranco Fisichella, and Toni Vilander, had an unfortunate flag during qualifying, leaving them to start thirteenth.

The race was nothing short of remarkable, with unexpected heavy rain deluging the track soon after the start. Fortunately the three AF Corse cars succeeded in negotiating the mayhem unscathed. After that, a technical fault at the track caused a total timing blackout, causing all results to be lost, and the race red-flagged with only 40 minutes to go!

After considerable trouble sorting out the correct positions, the race was re-started; the Watch Club drivers gave a good account of themselves in the final stint, with Gianmaria Bruni and Jaime Melo in second place and Alesi, Fisichella, and Vilander on the third step of the podium.

A hard-fought first race of the season; after starting at pole, Bruni and Melo suffered a puncture, forcing an unscheduled visit to the pit just minutes before the driver change. Hours of battling brought the team-mates back into sight of a podium finish when bad luck struck yet again, and they were forced to retire after mechanical failure.

Further afield, WatchClub-sponsored Jean Alesi was wrangling for first place, when, 15 minutes from the flag, he too suffered a puncture. A quick duck into the pits meant he “only” lost one place, leaving him on the podium at third place – an exceptional result overall, and very well-deserved, seeing as he and partners Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander had battled strategically for the full 24 hours.

Argentinean compatriots Matías Russo and Luís Pérez Companc did their job too, finishing fifth from sixth place on the grid. An excellent start to the season.

An outright win for Gimmi Bruni and Toni Vilander at the Marseilles track on 4 October 2009, with Álvaro Barba and Niki Cadei hot on their heels in third place.

Álvaro Barba and Niki Cadei did a fantastic job of working their way up from sixth on the grid to finish first at the Portimao circuit. Team-mates Vilander and Bruni also did well, staying in the top six.

A very hard race for the team. Excess ballast for Bruni and Vilander meant that they could claw no further up the grid than third; no matter, because they quickly battled to the lead. Unfortunately, in passing some traffic on the last lap, they were overtaken themselves, conceding first place to Prospeed Competition.

Team-mates Companc and Russo meanwhile, executed a technically flawless race, and between the group, the team managed to stay in the lead of both the drivers’ and team classifications.

A grand win for AF Corse, with four team-mates Bruni, Companc, Melo and Vilander finishing at the top of the podium. After four hours, the team’s two cars held a very solid lead, eight drivers battling it out with one another. What a shame that car no. 51 had to retire due to suspension problems with just a couple of hours to go.

In addition to their first place, AF Corse also finished fourth overall, competing against the more powerful GT1 cars on the same track.
